Surprise Police Department warns public of telephone scam

PHOENIX — Surprise Police Department is warning the public of a telephone scam in the area.
The announcement was made Wednesday via Facebook stating that there have already been multiple victims within the last few days.
The victims reported receiving a phone call from a suspect that identifies themselves as Surprise PD and states that the victim has a warrant out for their arrest or has failed to appear for jury duty.
The suspect also tells the victim that an officer will be sent to their home to take them into custody should a bond of up to $4,000 not be paid. Payment is requested via gift cards.
The phone number is reported to be appearing as the Surprise PD’s non-emergency telephone number (623-222-4000).
“YOUR Surprise Police Department never requests or accepts bond payments in the form of gift cards and never over the phone,” Surprise PD said in its Facebook post.
Surprise PD also says to report any phone calls from a person claiming to be law enforcement at (623-222-4000).
