Bureau of Land Management to host horse, burro adoption near Tucson

PHOENIX – The Bureau of Land Management is hosting a wild horse and burro adoption and sale March 22-24.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Marana Heritage Center, located about 20 miles northwest of Tucson.

The purpose of the event is to put excess burros and horses from public lands into private care, according to a press release.

To qualify to adopt or purchase, those interested have to be at least 18 years old and have BLM-approved facilities and transportation for the animals.

The applications for adopting or purchasing an animal are available online.

Fees start at $25 for untrained animals and $125 for trained animals.

Through BLM’s Adoption Incentive Program, adopters are eligible to receive up to $1,000 to reduce the cost of care.

All animals up for sale/adoption have been vaccinated, dewormed and checked by a veterinarian.

“Wild horses are known for their sure-footedness, strength, intelligence and endurance,” the press release said.

“With kindness and patience, these animals can be trained for many uses.”
