PHOENIX – An Arizona grand jury has indicted a Mesa man accused of scamming an elderly woman out of more than $2 million, the state attorney general announced Friday.
Donaldo Parra Jr. was charged with one count of fraudulent schemes and artifices and one count of theft on Feb. 25. Both crimes are Class 2 felonies.
According to the indictment, the fraud occurred between December 2017 and February of this year.
A press release from Attorney General Mark Brnovich said the indictment was the result of a Mesa Police Department investigation.
Police were notified by bank employees who said the woman appeared nervous and stressed while taking money out of her account.
The release said the woman thought the money was going toward a civil lawsuit against her car insurance company.
But investigators learned that the law firm supposedly handling the case didn’t exist, and neither did the lawsuit.
ABC15 reported that Parra, 44, owns an auto body shop in Mesa and had been arrested in 2015 for identity theft and insurance fraud.
