PHOENIX – Prodigious amounts of rain and unexpected hail and snow in the Phoenix area have been getting all the headlines, but the cold has also been historic, too.

The high temperature in Phoenix on Friday was 47 degrees, a record low for the date, according to the National Weather Service.

The previous coldest Feb. 22 in Phoenix topped out at 54 degrees, and that was all the way back in 1897.

Friday’s chill was a long way from the city’s all-time record of 36 degrees set in 1898.

It was the second consecutive day Phoenix set a weather record.

A total of 1.01 inches of rain was measured Thursday, setting a record for the date. The previous mark was 0.73 inches in 1973.

Another daily rain record wasn’t out of the question Friday afternoon.

By around 4 p.m., 0.26 inches had been measured at Sky Harbor International Airport, which was more than halfway to the record for Feb. 22 of 0.45 inches.

We want to hear from you.
