Tempe police shooting investigation sent to county attorney’s office

PHOENIX – The Tempe Police Department said Wednesday it has forwarded its investigation into an officer’s fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for review.
“As with all officer-involved shootings, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office will review the facts of this case and ultimately make a charging decision,” the department said in a press release.
The release said the department wasn’t given a timeframe for when the review would be completed.
No details were given about what kind of information was sent to the county attorney.

Body camera video of the Jan. 15 incident showed the boy running away down an alley when Officer Joseph Jaen shot him in the back.
Jaen had responded to a 911 call about a suspicious truck parked in an alley behind a home off 48th Street between Southern Avenue and Baseline Road.
The boy was carrying a toy airsoft replica handgun that he allegedly stole from the truck.
