PHOENIX — A man was killed after being struck by a Valley Metro light rail train in downtown Phoenix on Wednesday.

Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson told KTAR News 92.3 FM in an email that the pedestrian, later identified as Rodrigo Travino, tripped and fell onto the tracks in front of the train when the collision occurred.

The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. at the southbound First Avenue and Van Buren Street station.

Capt. Kenny Overton with the Phoenix Fire Department said the man was “trapped under the light rail for a time” before he was rescued and taken to a local hospital. The man was also “alert” and “complaining of rib pain.”

Thompson said the light rail would operate on a single track to minimize delays, but the stations at First Avenue and Van Buren Street, First Avenue and Jefferson Street and Third Street and Jefferson streets would be closed for some time.

Editor’s note: Phoenix police announced on Feb. 27 that Travino died.
