PHOENIX – American Airlines announced last summer it was adding nonstop service between Phoenix and London on a seasonal basis.
The route between Sky Harbor International and Heathrow airports hasn’t yet launched, but American is already expanding those plans.
On Thursday, the airline said the daily flights will be available year-round after they take off March 31.
Plans for American’s first intercontinental flight out of Sky Harbor were announced in August, and tickets went on sale soon after. The initial plan was for the new service to end Oct. 26.
Passengers can choose among three classes — business, premium economy and main cabin — for the approximately 10-hour flights on a Boeing 777-200ER.
British Airways is the only carrier currently providing nonstop service between Phoenix and London.
American is the only domestic airline with nonstop flights from Sky Harbor to Europe.
“The announcement of American Airlines extending their Phoenix to London nonstop service to year-round is good news for Phoenix,” City Councilwoman Felicita Mendoza, who represents the district that contains Sky Harbor, said in a press release.
“In addition to providing residents with even greater access to Europe for business and leisure travel, it will also provide a boost to our economy.”
According to Airports Council International data, Heathrow is the seventh-busiest airport in the world and the busiest in Europe.
