PHOENIX — A man arrested this week for allegedly trying to have sexual contact with a child worked for a Phoenix-area school district, according to authorities.

The Mesa Police Department arrested Mico Cano, 30, on Wednesday for luring and attempted sexual contact with a minor, Detective Esteban Flores said.

He said no other information about the case would be provided because it was under investigation.

The Paradise Valley Unified School District notified parents Thursday it had employed Cano since September 2017.

The letter to parents said there was no indication any of the district’s students were involved.

During the 2017-18 school year, Cano was a childcare worker in the before- and after-school program at Copper Canyon Elementary School, the district said.

This year he’d been supporting adults in similar programs at multiple sites and also served as a substitute in a variety of community education programs.

The district first alerted parents to the arrest the day it happened, although the initial letter didn’t include Cano’s name or role.

It did say the worker who’d been arrested had gone through the background check and fingerprint clearance that all employees must pass.

The second letter said parents with questions or concerns could contact the district’s community education department at 602-449-2205.

We want to hear from you.
