PHOENIX — A DUI is a DUI, no matter the wheels.

One man found this out the hard way, after he was charged with driving under the influence while riding an electric scooter in the Phoenix area last year.

Sgt. Ron Elcock with the Tempe Police Department told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Tuesday that Shelton Begay, 28, was charged in relation to the October incident.

It is believed to be the first electric scooter-related DUI charge in the Valley.

Begay was arrested in the area of Rural and Broadway roads around 9 a.m. on Oct. 26, according to court documents obtained by KTAR News 92.3 FM.

He had a blood alcohol content of .285, more than twice the legal limit.

According to court documents, he was riding along Rural Road when he was involved in a crash with a parked car in another lane.

The woman who was in the other car said she saw him swerving in his lane before the wreck.

Begay fled the scene on the scooter but was located shortly after.

He told police that he had fallen off his scooter and admitted to hitting a car.

Police said Begay showed several signs of impairment, including slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. Small bottles of alcohol were also found in his backpack.

Scrapes were seen along the electric scooter and a dent was found in the side of the woman’s car, the court documents showed.
