PHOENIX — A suspect who was believed to have been involved in an overnight home invasion was shot and killed by Phoenix police Wednesday morning.
Police identified the suspect Wednesday night as 47-year-old Michael Joe Jolls.
Sgt. Armando Carbajal said detectives were searching the area for Jolls after he was tied to a home invasion near 27th Avenue and Camelback Road.
The home invasion was reported around 4 a.m. Wednesday. The victim said someone forced entry into their home and stole their vehicle.
Carbajal said officers followed Jolls after he left a residence and began walking northbound on North Seventh Street.
He said Jolls pointed a handgun at one officer, then began walking southbound and pointed the gun at another officer, who then shot at Jolls.
Carbajal said two police sergeants arrived around that time and saw the suspect pointing his gun toward the officer and people at a bus stop.
Both of the sergeants also shot at Jolls. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers were injured in the shooting.
It was not immediately known whether there was a relationship between the suspect and the victim, and no motive for the home invasion was given.
Seventh Street was expected to be closed in both directions from Northern Avenue to Harmont Drive until the early evening hours while officers investigate.
It was the second shooting involving Phoenix police in 2019.
The first officer-involved shooting with Phoenix police occurred on Jan. 11, when an armed robbery suspect was shot and killed after police said he pulled a gun on officers during a traffic stop.
Last year, Phoenix recorded 44 officer-involved shootings, an agency high.
