PHOENIX — Once thought as a futuristic dream, electric cars are here and here to stay.

But with all the hype turning to the alternative, how does Arizona rank in the electric age?

According to YourMechanic.com, the copper state finds itself at No. 13 in terms of the best place to live in for electric car owners.

With a max score of 40, the ranking took into account electric vehicle sales, fuel costs, number of public charging stations and vehicle market share.

Looking at how the state fared in each, Arizona somewhat underwhelmed in a number of categories.

It came in at No. 24 for electric vehicles sales, but ranked 32nd in terms of fuel costs. And with 474 charging stations in the state and 14,802 people per station, Arizona landed in the middle of the pack at No. 26.

Arizona ranked the best in electric vehicle market share, with .90 percent of all light vehicles sold in 2017 being electric. California took the top spot with a 5.02-percent market share.

Looking at specific vehicles, the most popular electric ride in the state was the Tesla Model X. The BMW i8 was the most popular when looking at the country as a whole.

Nationally, California was narrowly edged out by Oklahoma, which ranked first in electric vehicle sales, as the top state for electric car owners with a score of 27.82.

Alaska rounded out the list, coming in at No. 50, with a final score of 5.01.
