PHOENIX — Parts of Interstate 10 in the West Valley will be closed over the weekend, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Eastbound I-10 will be closed between 67th and 35th avenues for construction on the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway interchange beginning 9 p.m. Friday.

The closure will be reduced to the area between 43rd and 35th avenues at 12 p.m. Saturday, and the entire closure will be lifted by 4 a.m. Monday.

Eastbound I-10 on-ramps at 91st, 83rd, 79th and 75th avenues will be closed, as well as the eastbound I-10 access road between 67th and 51st avenues.

ADOT encouraged drivers to allow for extra travel time and consider alternate routes like Loop 101, west of Interstate 17.

McDowell Road and Van Buren Street will be used as the primary local detour routes.

Westbound I-10 at Sarival Avenue in Goodyear and the westbound on-ramp at Estrella Parkway will be closed from 10 p.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday for installation of traffic-flow sensors.

ADOT said drivers can either take the freeway frontage road to access I-10 at Citrus Road, or they can exit I-10 ahead of the closure and take McDowell Road.

The eastbound closure comes as the developer of the South Mountain Freeway moves on to the next phase of construction, ADOT said.

The 22-mile stretch of highway, which is scheduled to open in late 2019, will provide a new connection for motorists traveling between the East Valley and West Valley that bypasses downtown Phoenix.

The agency said drivers can expect more frequent I-10 closures in the next several months as the project moves toward completion.

This weekend, crews will work on the I-10 center median as well as bridge structures for HOV ramps.

Crews will also remove the 1-inch top layer of smooth, rubberized asphalt from I-10 between 51st and 43rd avenues. The pavement in this area will continue to be rough until it is resurfaced at a later date in the project’s schedule.

ADOT provides real-time highway conditions online, on Twitter or over the phone at 511.

Drivers can also gets alerts and alternate route notifications via ADOT’s mobile app.
