PHOENIX — Arizona’s Latino community is mobilizing to get out the vote, well ahead of next year’s presidential election.

It’s not just about promoting Latino candidates.

“It’s about empowering people and understanding that they’re not giving away the power that they have in their hand — the power of the vote,” David Adame, president and CEO of Chicanos Por La Causa, said.

Adame spoke with KTAR News 92.3 FM before he participated in the “The State of the Latino Vote” panel discussion Wednesday at Phoenix College.

He added that Arizona Latinos helped elect Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, and also re-elect Republican Gov. Doug Ducey because of his good relations with Mexico.

“He’s partnering with Mexico, and understands that 40 percent of exports from Arizona go to Mexico,” Adame said. “The economies are so integrated.”

In 2020, Adame said he expects Latinos to vote for candidates who will fight President Trump and his border wall.

“It’s kind of a slap in the face, especially when you know that there’s so much Mexican investment coming over,” Adame said. “They’re maintaining jobs here.”

Adame cited Grupo Bimbo, a Mexican manufacturing company that owns Sara Lee and Entenmann’s bakeries, as an example.

But Adame also stressed the importance of border security to stop criminals, human trafficking and the illegal drug trade.
