PHOENIX — Two terrorism charges were filed against a man shot by a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office sergeant last week in Fountain Hills, according to court records.

Ismail Hamed, 18, provided “advice, assistance, direction or management” to ISIS and engaged in an act of terrorism on Jan. 7, the same day of the shooting incident, according to charges filed in Maricopa County Superior Court on Tuesday.

No further details about the Class 2 felony terrorism charges were made available.

After the incident, Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez, an MCSO spokesman, said Hamed called 911 and asked to talk to a deputy at the substation near Palisades and Saguaro boulevards.

A sergeant who was identified only as a 12-year veteran contacted the suspect outside the substation around 5:30 p.m., shortly before Hamed allegedly started throwing rocks at him.

Hamed then allegedly “brandished a knife and advanced towards the sergeant, despite his repeated commands for him to drop the weapon,” Enriquez said.

The sergeant then shot Hamed, who was given first aid on the scene and transported to a hospital.

It was the first shooting involving law enforcement in metro Phoenix this year. There have been three other such shootings since.

Hamed was initially charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

A status conference was scheduled for Thursday, and a penitentiary hearing was set for Friday. Hamed’s preliminary hearing will be held Jan. 22.

Bond was set at $500,000.
