PHOENIX – Maricopa County Supervisor Denny Barney has announced he will resign effective Feb. 1 to concentrate on running the nonprofit East Valley Partnership.

Barney, whose District 1 covers Gilbert, Chandler, Queen Creek, Tempe, Sun Lakes, west Mesa and Phoenix’s Ahwatukee area, had already been presiding over the coalition as president part-time since May 2018.

“I’ve truly enjoyed the past six years working with my colleagues, staff and private partners to enrich the lives of our residents,” Barney said in a statement released Friday.

“I couldn’t ask to work with a more dedicated group of public servants who are willing to change years-old processes, in some cases, to achieve better levels of service.”

The East Valley Partnership has described its goals as “advancing business and community initiatives” in its region. The coalition of civic, business, education leaders and politicians was formed in 1982.

Barney said last year he wouldn’t run for another term as supervisor. He was elected in 2012 and served as board chairman in 2014 and 2017.

Maricopa is the fourth-largest county in the United States with more than 4.3 million people and has five supervisors.

The board will appoint a replacement to finish the term, which ends in 2020. He or she must be of the same political affiliation as Barney, who was an at-large delegate for the state at the 2016 Republican National Convention.

The replacement must also live in the same district and will have to run for the seat after the term is up if he or she wants to stay on the board.

We want to hear from you.
