PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Transportation is closing a mile-long stretch of 59th Avenue until the spring as part of the massive Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway project.

The west Phoenix thruway will be shut down between Van Buren Street and Buckeye Road starting at 7 p.m. Friday.

The closure is expected to last through March while workers construct the first section of frontage roads for the new freeway.

ADOT advised motorists to use 51st or 67th avenues as a detour.

After the work is done, 59th Avenue traffic will be temporarily shifted to the new frontage road with one lane in each direction.

The South Mountain Freeway will add 22 miles of highway to the Valley with a new loop that connects the East and West Valleys.

Work on the final link of the Valley’s Loop 202 and 101 system started in early 2017 and is expected to be completed by late 2019.

The new highway will pick up where the Loop 202 currently ends at Interstate 10 in Chandler and reconnect with I-10 at 59th Avenue.

ADOT estimates that as many as 190,000 vehicles will use the route daily by 2035.
