MCSO deputy in serious condition after being hit by vehicle

PHOENIX — A Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office deputy is in serious but stable condition after he was struck by a vehicle in Queen Creek Wednesday night.
The agency said the deputy was struck by a Ford F-250 truck while investigating a crash near Chandler Heights and Power Road around 6 p.m.
The driver remained at the scene and was not cited or arrested. Impairment and distraction were not immediately suspected as factors in the crash.
“The MCSO family is incredibly thankful our deputy is stable and on the path to recovery,” Sheriff Paul Penzone said in a statement.
“I visited him last night, he remains in good spirits and was surrounded by family, friends and peers. We look forward to his full and complete recovery and appreciate the community’s support.”
No further details about the incident were immediately available.
The deputy who was struck was identified as a 54-year-old man who has been with the department for 10 years.
Just one day earlier, Salt River Police Officer Clayton Townsend was fatally struck by a car while conducting a traffic stop on Loop 101 near McDowell Road.
Update: MCSO said on Jan. 14 that the deputy, identified as 54-year-old Armando Gomez, has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.
