PHOENIX — Scottsdale native Emma Stone may have not taken home any Golden Globes during Sunday night’s ceremony, but she still made headlines.

Host Sandra Oh was praising the hit 2018 film “Crazy Rich Asians” for being the “first studio film with an Asian-American lead since ‘Ghost in the Shell’ and ‘Aloha.'”

Stone, who played a part-Hawaiian and part-Chinese woman in the 2015 film “Aloha,” could then be heard yelling, “I’m sorry!” off-screen, drawing laughs from the crowd.

Stone is white, much like Scarlett Johansson, who starred in the 2017 drama “Ghost in the Shell,” which was an adaptation of the popular Japanese manga series.

Both actresses have been criticized for whitewashing the Asian roles, but this is not the first time Stone acknowledged and apologized for the controversy.

“I’ve learned on a macro level about the insane history of whitewashing in Hollywood and how prevalent the problem truly is,” Stone said in a 2015 interview.

“It’s ignited a conversation that’s very important.”

Stone was nominated for best supporting actress for her role in “The Favourite,” but lost to Regina King for her performance in “If Beale Street Could Talk.”
