Pedestrian killed after being struck by Arizona DPS vehicle

PHOENIX — A 39-year-old male was pronounced dead Friday night after being hit by an Arizona Department of Public Safety vehicle.
The pedestrian has been identified as Jason. E. Rangel. The vehicle was being driven by a DPS sergeant, who was not immediately identified.
Rangel was pronounced dead at the scene. The sergeant was not injured.
The Casa Grande native “was walking in the lane of traffic and was struck by the sergeant’s vehicle,” according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
It is unknown why Rangel was walking in the middle of the service road or how he was struck by the vehicle.
The sergeant was traveling northbound on SR-387, near milepost three, around 9:30 p.m.
The investigation is ongoing.
