PHOENIX – Authorities said they found an unfinished tunnel under the U.S.-Mexico border in Nogales, Arizona, and Nogales, Sonora during a routine sweep.
The U.S Border Patrol said in an email Tuesday the entry point, next to the Port of Nogales DeConcini Crossing, was underwater on the Mexico side and stopped below a parking lot on the Arizona side.
The passageway was found Monday.
Tucson Sector agents found digging tools and “structural shoring,” leading them to believe excavation was still in progress.
The tunnel was described as approximately 50 feet long and 2 feet square.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the tunnel will be filled with cement.
