PHOENIX – A volunteer firefighter in Arizona died last week when the all-terrain vehicle he was driving rolled over on his way home.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office reported Monday that Peter Cannata, 61, was killed Saturday evening in the Prescott Valley area.

He had left a holiday party held by members of the Southern Yavapai Fire Department.

He reportedly told friends he was going home.

The sheriff’s office said there were indications the Polaris 850 ATV lost traction, went sideways and rolled at least once. The vehicle landed on Cannata, who suffered severe head injuries.

Cannata wasn’t wearing a helmet.

The Southern Yavapai Fire Department posted its loss on Facebook on Sunday:

It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that I let you all know that Southern Yavapai fire department lost one of their own last night, Pete Cannata. Pete has been on the department for just a little less than a year. Pete was a good man that wanted nothing more than to help his community. Pete will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Cause of the accident was being investigated.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
