PHOENIX — HonorHealth broke ground Thursday on its sixth hospital, the 210,000-square-foot Sonoran Medical Center.

The center will be located at Interstate 17 and Dove Valley Road in north Phoenix, adding to the campus already housing the Sonoran Health and Emergency Center that opened in 2013.

The new hospital will include 40 inpatient beds, comprehensive obstetrical and gynecological care, expertise in joint replacement and other minimally invasive procedures, and 24-hour emergency care.

“Building on a century-long legacy of caring for our community, the HonorHealth Sonoran Medical Center will provide enhanced medical services — including labor and delivery — to residents of north Phoenix,” Kim Post, HonorHealth chief clinical officer, said in a news release.

The existing hospital will become an outpatient center with a breast health center and medical imaging services.

The new $170 million hospital is expected to open in September 2020.

HonorHealth is a community healthcare system that operates five acute-care hospitals in the Valley, three in Scottsdale and two in Phoenix.

It was formed by a merger between Scottsdale Healthcare and John C. Lincoln Health Network.
