It’s officially over: Top Arizona officials certify November election results

PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and other top state officials on Monday certified the election results of November’s general election, almost a month after voters took to the polls to elect their representatives.

The signing of the official election canvass by Ducey, outgoing Secretary of State Michele Reagan, Attorney General Mark Brnovich and state Supreme Court Chief Justice Scott Bales is a formality that spotlights changes in Arizona’s political direction.

Ducey and Brnovich were both re-elected to their respective positions after the Nov. 6 election, but Reagan was replaced by Secretary of State-elect Katie Hobbs, a Democrat who beat out Republican Steve Gaynor in a close race.

The election also saw Arizona’s first female U.S. senator and the first Democratic U.S. Senator since the mid-1990s: U.S. Sen.-elect Kyrsten Sinema.

Ducey won re-election by 14 percentage points over Democrat David Garcia, while Sinema was elected to the Senate over Republican Martha McSally with a 2 percentage point margin of victory.

Democrats also won top statewide races for the first time this decade, including secretary of state, schools superintendent and a corporation commission seat.

Reagan said 2.4 million Arizonans voted in the election, making turnout 17 points higher than the previous midterm election and the highest it has been in nearly 40 years.

“Between the general and the primary, 3.62 million votes were cast,” she said in a statement. “Coconino, Gila, Maricopa, Pima, and Yavapai all had the highest turnout percentage of any midterm on record.”
