PHOENIX — The votes are in and the baby reindeer at the Phoenix Zoo finally has a name — Noel.
The Phoenix Zoo announced the name that won its week-plus contest Wednesday. Noel, a female reindeer, hauled in about 1,300 of the 2,500 or so online votes. Runner-up was Flurry, which got around 1,000 votes.
Caribae finished a distant third.
“We are thrilled with all of the excitement the community showed as they passionately voted for their favorite name,” zoo spokeswoman Linda Hardwick said in a statement.
Zoo workers had narrowed the choices to three names before turning over the final decision to the public.
The contest ended Monday.
The 6-month-old Noel is one of four reindeer visiting the zoo for the holidays. She, Frosty, Snowflake and Velvet will be on their way shortly after the annual ZooLights display ends Jan. 13.
The four will go back home to a petting zoo in Southern California.
ZooLights run nightly from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
