PHOENIX – The only Arizona state road that accesses a highway to the Grand Canyon’s North Rim has been scheduled to close next week for the winter season.
State Route 67, which connects with U.S. 89A near Jacob Lake, will be shut down starting Monday, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.
With lodging and visitor amenities out of service during the snow season, the department does not send snow plows to clear the north-south running state route.
The highway will most likely reopen mid-May.
Some roads will also close for winter in eastern Arizona in late December.
State routes 261, 273 and 473 leading to lakes in the White Mountains region will shut down Dec. 31.
In the past, State Route 261 has been closed between milepost 404.9, several miles south of State Route 260, and the SR 273 junction at Crescent Lake.
The eastern-area highways could close earlier depending on weather.
