PHOENIX – A fire has killed one wallaby, injured another and damaged two pens at the zoo in Prescott, sanctuary officials said Tuesday.
Fire officials said a heat lamp in the ruined building at the Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary was “the only possible source of ignition.”
Three other wallabies were not injured.
The nonprofit zoo said in a post to Facebook that staff leaving for the night Monday saw the fire burning in the wallaby enclosure. They called 9-1-1 immediately.
Fire crews arrived and put out the blaze that also affected the donkey exhibit. None of those animals were hurt.
“We are fortunate that there wasn’t further damage to the zoo and that no public or staff were injured as a result of the fire,” the social media post read.
For the time being, the wallabies and donkeys will be kept off-site.
The zoo said it would be open business hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
