PHOENIX – Onetime Democratic Arizona gubernatorial candidate Fred DuVal has been named to the state university system’s board of regents.
Gov. Doug Ducey, who beat DuVal in the 2014 governor’s race, made the announcement Monday.
It marked the second stint on the governing board for DuVal, who was chairman of the Arizona Board of Regents in 2011.
In a tweet DuVal, who was born and raised in Tucson and attended the University of Arizona, said he appreciated Ducey’s bipartisanship.
I greatly appreciate the Governors bipartisanship and his confidence. We will work effectively together on workforce, to spur innovation and immediately to produce more teachers through the Arizona Teachers Academy. https://t.co/BwOXYKBERw

Duval added in a statement, “I look forward to using my previous policy experience as a Regent to make a significant impact on our state’s workforce needs and economic development and to make college more affordable for all students.”
Ducey said in a statement, “Fred is a remarkable leader who brings with him immeasurable higher education experience and knowledge through his long-standing involvement with the University of Arizona.”
Board Chairman Ron Shoopmen said in a statement, “(Duval’s) experience as a former regent, his tremendous advocacy for public higher education and his keen policy insight will benefit our universities, our students and the entire state.”
DuVal’s father Dr. Merlin DuVal was founding dean of the school’s College of Medicine.
DuVal replaced Rick Meyers. He had been appointed to the eight-year term in January 2010 by Gov. Jan Brewer.
