PHOENIX — The phrase ‘workin’ like a dog’ has taken a literal significance to the the Arizona State University Police Department.
On Friday, the department introduced its newest member of the police force, a three-month-old Labrador retriever named Dutch.
Dutch was brought on to the police force as a trauma dog and will undergo several months of therapy training before he will be ready to encounter victims of traumatic crimes.
ASU police sergeant Jason Latella, Dutch’s handler, lives with the puppy and said that having a trauma dog can normalize a victim’s brain activity.
Dutch is the third dog to join the department, joining with Tillman and Zeke who serve as patrol and explosive-sniffing dogs.
He is named after ASU police officer James “Dutch” Lister who passed away from a heart attack while on duty in 2010.
