PHOENIX — Christmas is still more than a month away, but those who plan on celebrating the holiday can head up north to get Christmas trees starting Friday.
The Coconino National Forest began selling over-the-counter Christmas tree permits to the public to allow people to cut in designated areas of the Flagstaff and Mogollon Rim ranger districts.
The Flagstaff Ranger Station will be selling 200 permits for Pinyon and Juniper trees in the Flagstaff Ranger District, and 300 permits for Fir, Pinyon Pine or Ponderosa Pine trees.
The Mogollon Rim Ranger Station will also have 600 permits for Fir, Pinyon Pine, and Ponderosa Pine trees in the Mogollon Rim district.
Those who get their hands on a permit can cut down their tree until Christmas Eve.
But you better act fast — only 1,100 permits are available. They are $15 each and are issued one per household on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Coconino National Forest officials said the permits sold out in a week last year.
But Coconino is not the only forest in Arizona selling permits for Christmas trees.
The Tonto National Forest began selling permits for Christmas trees on Tuesday. Prescott National Forest will start selling 600 over-the-counter permits on Saturday.
