Police fatally shoot suspect after car chase from Phoenix to Glendale

PHOENIX — An armed robbery suspect was shot and killed by Phoenix Police after a car chase across town that ended in Glendale on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The man was wanted in a string of armed robberies, including a carjacking, over the last week, Officer Tiffany Smith of the Glendale Police Department said during a press conference.

“It was extremely imperative that officers were able to encounter him and ensure that he didn’t victimize another person within this Valley,” she said.

Smith said the incident started when Phoenix Police officers responded to an armed robbery call near 32nd Street and Thomas Road at 2:40 p.m. Smith said she didn’t know which business was being robbed.

Officers saw the suspect leaving the scene, Smith said. He fled in his car, and police pursued him.

“He was a violent, fleeing felon,” Smith said.

Helicopters from several TV stations eventually started following the incident and broadcast live streams of the chase online.

The chase ended and the shooting occurred outside an apartment complex in the area of 64th Drive and Bethany Home Road in Glendale.

No officers were injured. Smith said she didn’t know if the suspect fired a weapon.

Glendale Police responded to the scene after the shooting and will handle the investigation.

“Officer-involved shootings and incidents like this take several hours to investigate before we can get more information about what exactly occurred here,” Smith said.
