PHOENIX — Kartchner Caverns State Park will close periodically throughout December as Arizona State Parks and Trails crew members make critical updates, the agency announced Monday.
The crews will replace the current lighting system within the caves, swapping it out for environmentally-friendly LED fixtures.
The new lights will reduce heat inside the caves and prevent the growth of harmful algae, according to a news release.
The Big Room will close from Nov. 26 to Dec. 7, and the Rotunda and Throne Room will close from Dec. 10-21.
Both areas will be open for Thanksgiving weekend, and the last improvements will be finished before the December holidays.
All other parts of the park, including trails, campsites and cabins, are not expected to close.
The park encouraged visitors to plan ahead and make reservations in advance.
