PHOENIX – Two charities are making a push to collect turkeys so more Valley families can enjoy a traditional meal for Thanksgiving.

The Phoenix Rescue Mission and Phoenix-based St. Mary’s Food Bank are holding food drives in the lead-up to the holiday.

On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Phoenix Rescue Mission is hoping to collect 1,000 frozen turkeys at its Community Solutions Center at 1801 S. 35th Ave.

Anybody donating a turkey that day can take a tour of the facility, get a free barbecue lunch and enjoy live music.

On Nov. 17, the nonprofit group will distribute food boxes with the turkeys and other supplies for Thanksgiving dinner to families living in poverty.

Food and supplies for Phoenix’s homeless population can also be dropped off at the facility daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Items needed and other drop-off locations can be found at the mission’s website.

Also on Nov. 17, the St. Mary’s Food Bank is aiming to collect 7,000 turkeys plus other Thanksgiving dinner items during its 12th annual Super Saturday Turkey Drive.

In a press release, the food bank said it was behind pace to reach its goal of serving more than 11,000 families for the holiday.

“If you have supported this incredible effort in the past we ask that you remember those in need and donate a turkey to ensure Arizona families will be able to have the comfort of a traditional Thanksgiving meal with their loved ones,” St. Mary’s spokesman Jerry Brown said in the release.

The drive will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the food bank’s Phoenix and Surprise locations as well as 28 Albertson’s and Safeway stores around the Valley and in Flagstaff.
