Authorities investigating suspicious death of woman in Mesa

PHOENIX — Authorities were investigating a suspicious death in the East Valley on Tuesday morning.
Officers initially responded to an injured man near Southern Avenue and 80th Street in Mesa before discovering the body of a woman, police said.
The woman was identified Thursday as 19-year-old Briana Richards.
The man was taken to a hospital. No details about his injuries were provided, but he remained hospitalized Thursday.
He told responders that the woman could be found nearby. Officers found the body, which had signs of trauma, after searching the area.
Southern was closed between Sossaman and Hawes roads after police responded.

Personnel from the Mesa and Tempe police departments and Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene.
No other information was immediately available.
