NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) – The International Criminal Court prosecutor says her case against four prominent Kenyans will proceed next April even though it will occur close to Kenya’s presidential elections.
Fatou Bensouda said Monday that Kenya at large is not on trial, and neither is any one specific ethnic group, statements intended to decrease the chances of violence during next year’s voting.
Bensouda is in Kenya on a weeklong trip to speak with top officials, victims and witnesses to the country’s 2007-2008 postelection violence. She also said court witnesses are being intimidated and need better protection.
More than 1,000 people died during Kenya’s last presidential election. Two top Kenyan politicians who will be active in next year’s election campaign face trial at the ICC on April 10.
