PHOENIX — The Eagle Point Second Chance Center welcomed special visitors on Tuesday as Gov. Doug Ducey, Arizona Cardinals football players Antoine Bethea and Corey Peters and Cardinals president Michael Bidwill toured the center.
As a lower-security prison in Buckeye, the center works toward providing inmates with training and skills to give prisoners a better chance at assimilating back to society upon their release from the prison system.
The Eagle Point Unit, which houses 285 inmates, is a branch of the Lewis Prison, which keeps more than 5,600 prisoners.
The Arizona Department of Correction as a whole has more than 42,000 inmates across the state.
Ducey highlighted prison reform in his 2017 State of the State address and reiterated the importance of reducing the recidivism rate in Arizona in 2018.
In September, Ducey met with several members of the Cardinals organization to discuss criminal justice reform.
Ducey is running for re-election in November against Democratic challenger David Garcia.
