PHOENIX – Residents of Arizona’s third-largest city are getting an easier way to get rid of hazardous waste.

On Monday, Mesa held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Household Hazardous Materials Facility.

“We’re going to be able to go from 20 hours of service a year to 20 hours of service a week with this facility,” Scott Bouchie, director of Environmental Management and Sustainability for the city, said during the event.

The facility on Center Street north of the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway will open to the public Wednesday.

Mesa solid waste residential customers (with proof of residency) will have year-round access to safely dispose of hazardous materials there every Wednesday-Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon.

The building will be closed on city holidays.

“I’ve learned it’s important to take things out of the waste stream, repurpose them, recycle them and reuse them throughout our society. Otherwise our landfills will become congested,” Councilman Mark Freeman said.

Mesa’s website provides details about what materials can (and can’t) be dropped off, as well as limits on amounts.

Acceptable items on the lengthy list include aerosols, batteries, electronics, fluorescent light bulbs and a variety of chemicals.

We want to hear from you.
