Mattress Firm files for bankruptcy, will close 16 stores in Arizona

PHOENIX — Mattress Firm, the largest mattress retailer in the country, has filed for bankruptcy protection and planned to close a dozen stores in metro Phoenix.
The company filed Chapter 11 last week and said it would shut down up to 700 underperforming stores around the United States, some to be out of business quickly.
The Phoenix Business Journal reported the plan originally included closure of 10 stores in Arizona, but by Wednesday the number had grown to 16.
There were no liquidation sales scheduled.
CEO Steve Stagner said in a statement on the company website that “certain markets … have too many locations in close proximity to each other.”
In the Valley, the following stores will end operations:
- • Chandler: 1305 S. Arizona Ave.
•Chandler: 2780 W. Chandler Blvd.
•Chandler: 7230 W. Ray Road.
•Mesa: 1754 S. Greenfield Road.
•Mesa: 1335 S. Alma School Road.
•Phoenix: 3240 E. Camelback Road.
•Phoenix: 20330 N. Cave Creek Road.
•Scottsdale: 14900 N. Pima Road.
•Scottsdale: 14601 N. Scottsdale Road.
•Scottsdale: 10340 N. Scottsdale Road.
•Tempe: 4455 S. Rural Road.
•Tolleson: 9860 Lower Buckeye Road.
A store in Casa Grande, at 2461 E. Florence Road, was also on the list, as were three stores in Tucson.
