PHOENIX — Republican hopeful Martha McSally has enlisted the aid of fellow U.S. Senate candidate — and former aspirant to the presidency — Mitt Romney for a campaign event this week in Gilbert.

The rally to get out the vote was to be held Friday at the Falls Event Center at Baseline and Greenfield roads from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The event is free but requires registration.

Romney campaigned with McSally in 2014, when she ran for re-election for the U.S. House seat she currently holds.

He also came to the Valley in 2016 to campaign for Sen. John McCain’s re-election.

Romney won the Republican nomination for president in 2012 but lost to incumbent Barack Obama.

He is the GOP candidate in Utah to succeed Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch, who is retiring after 42 years in office.

McSally has been in a heated contest with Democratic U.S. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema to replace outgoing Republican Sen. Jeff Flake, who announced a year ago he would not seek re-election.

McSally has been building up steam in the polls. A survey released Wednesday by ABC15/OH Predictive Insights put the former fighter pilot in front of Sinema 47 percent to 41 percent. A month ago, the same polling firm had McSally leading 49 percent to 46 percent.

McSally and Sinema have agreed to a debate next week in Phoenix.
