STOCKHOLM (AP) – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says she’s not drawing any conclusions about what effect the latest hash words from Iran might have on the potential success of upcoming nuclear talks in Moscow.
Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said Sunday that any Israeli attack against Tehran would be answered with a “lightning” response. He also suggested that Western penalties against Iran cannot curtail Iran’s nuclear program.
Clinton said at a news conference in Stockholm that Iran has said consistently it would act to defend itself from attack. Khamenei also has said repeatedly said that Iran does not seek nuclear arms and has called such weapons against Islamic principles.
Clinton says leaders often say things for domestic purposes, and she hopes Iran will work toward a diplomatic solution.
