PHOENIX — A police standoff at a home in Phoenix ended early Tuesday when a man suspected of trying to run over an officer during a traffic stop was forced to give up.

The barricade at an apartment near Interstate 17 and Jefferson Street began around 2 a.m., nearly a day after police had shot at the man after he clipped an officer with a car.

A woman who had been inside came out. She had also been in the car during the traffic stop. Both were arrested.

Sgt. Vince Lewis said the man and woman had been in a car that was stopped Monday near 52nd Avenue and McDowell Road. When officers walked up to the car in a hotel parking lot, the man driving put the vehicle in reverse and ran into the patrol vehicle.

He then put the car in drive but was blocked and the engine stalled. When the 47-year-old officer opened the driver side door and reached for the suspect, the driver put the car in reverse and the open door knocked down another policeman, who was then dragged a few feet.

That officer fired off a round at the car. The driver backed his way out of the parking lot, hitting the patrol vehicle again, before reaching the street.

The car was found abandoned nearby a short time afterward.

The officer suffered minor injuries.

The male suspect was later identified as 32-year-old Hector Enriquez. He was booked on two counts of aggravated assault on police plus unrelated charges that weren’t specified by authorities.

The woman, who was not identified, was booked on unspecified charges not related to this incident.

Editor’s note: The officer involved was identified on Oct. 18 as Jamie Corrales. He is a 21-year veteran with the department. He is recovering at home.
