PHOENIX — A West Valley school district is planning to name a new elementary school after the late Arizona political icon John McCain.
The Buckeye Elementary School District Governing Board voted unanimously Monday to name the future campus John S. McCain III Elementary School.
In a press release, the district said it had Cindy McCain’s blessing to name the school in her husband’s memory, adding that she looked forward to being involved.
McCain died in August about a year after being diagnosed with brain cancer. He was serving his sixth term in the U.S. Senate at the time of his death.
“The qualities that Sen. McCain so passionately and effectively represented are what we wish to enshrine as a model for the children of our community,” Superintendent Dr. Kristi Sandvik said in the release.
The district currently operates seven elementary schools and two preschools and serves more than 5,500 students.
Last night the BESD Governing Board unanimously voted to name our next school “John S. McCain III Elementary.” This will be the 8th K-8 school for BESD. Special thank you to the McCain family for allowing us to honor Senator McCain in this way. @KsandvikBESD33 #edchat #JohnMcCain pic.twitter.com/8Pkjr3wS5Q
