THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) – Thousands of Dutch Vodafone customers were left without cell phone or mobile Internet coverage Wednesday due to a fire near one of the mobile provider’s network centers, the company said.
The outage came as firefighters battled a major blaze in Rotterdam in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Vodafone said in a statement the fire and water used to extinguish it had likely destroyed all the equipment in its network center.
Vodafone said the outage initially covered much of the densely populated urban region known as the Randstad.
The company said dozens of technicians were attempting to restore coverage and expected 2G mobile phone traffic to be restored by the end of the day. It said about 10-15 percent of its five million Dutch clients were affected.
Vodafone did not say how long it expected to take to restore mobile internet services.
