Italy orders probe into destroyed embryos

ROME (AP) – Italy’s health minister has ordered an investigation into an apparent mechanical failure at a Rome hospital that resulted in the destruction of 94 frozen embryos.
According to the Health Ministry, Minister Renato Balduzzi also ordered an inspection of the assisted procreation facility at the San Filippo Neri hospital scheduled for Tuesday.
Italian news agency LaPresse said a March 27 mechanical failure in the equipment that keeps embryos frozen resulted in the destruction of 94 embryos and more than 100 eggs.
The hospital’s phone operator refused to take media calls Saturday.
