NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) – Al-Qaida’s North African branch told a Mauritanian news portal that it is holding a German citizen captive after abducting him in Nigeria.
The January kidnapping of engineer Edgar Fritz Raupach in the northern town of Kano is believed to be the first time the terror franchise has kidnapped a foreigner in Nigeria, which is Africa’s most populous nation.
The statement by al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, was carried Wednesday by the Nouakchott Information Agency website which has been used by the group to send messages.
AQIM is demanding that German authorities release Oum Seif Allah Al Ansari, who the terror group said was being subjected to inhumane treatment in a German prison.
