BLANTYRE, Malawi (AP) – Malawi government and political party officials say the son of the southern African country’s former president has been arrested.
The United Democratic Party of the former president said 34-year-old Austin Atupele Muluzi, a presidential aspirant for the party, was arrested by police Tuesday as he drove his car toward Blantyre, the commercial capital.
Austin Atupele Muluzi is the son of Malawi’s former president Bakili Muluzi.
Police said the arrests of Muluzi and two others followed investigations into violent disturbances at a political rally they organized Sunday. Tear gas was used to disperse rioters who torched a police station where a rifle was stolen and several prisoners were freed.
Police and witnesses said sporadic violence continued into Monday near the rally venue in the administrative capital of Lilongwe.
