GENEVA (AP) – The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross says he will meet with Russia’s foreign minister Monday seeking a daily break in fighting in Syria to improve access for aid workers.
ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger says his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will focus on areas affected by the uprising against President Bashar Assad where the humanitarian situation “remains extremely difficult and could deteriorate further.”
Kellenberg said Sunday the Red Cross “is asking for an unambiguous commitment” from all parties to arrange a daily cessation in Syrian fighting for at least two hours.
He says a humanitarian corridor is “essential” for emergency medical evacuations and bringing aid to vulnerable people swiftly.
