DURANGO, Mexico (AP) – Mexican authorities say a state lawmaker was among dozens of victims found last year in mass graves in the northern state of Durango.
State prosecutor Sonia de la Garza said Thursday the body of Alfonso Pena was found in a clandestine grave in the city of Durango, but authorities didn’t make that public pending the family’s authorization.
Pena was kidnapped by gunmen in downtown Durango in 2010, three weeks after being elected to the state congress.
The 39-year-old politician had taken a leave of absence as mayor of the remote, mountainous town of Tepehuanes, located in a marijuana growing region.
Since April, police have found more than 330 bodies in clandestine graves in Durango, mostly in the state capital of the same name.
