GENEVA (AP) – Three girls who were badly injured in a bus crash that killed 28 people in Switzerland have regained consciousness and are out of immediate danger, the hospital treating them reported Tuesday.
The bus was carrying 52 people back to Belgium after a ski holiday in Switzerland when it hit a tunnel wall last week, killing 22 children and all six adults on board. Another 24 children were injured but the three girls were the last still hospitalized in Switzerland.
“The health condition of the young patients has improved considerably and there is no immediate risk to their lives anymore,” the Lausanne University Hospital said in a statement.
It said two girls with head injuries were brought out of artificial comas and “their neurological condition is developing favorably.”
The third girl who suffered spinal injuries is showing encouraging signs of recovery and has been able to move her fingers and toes, the hospital said.
All were able to speak to their parents.
“For the three, a long path of rehabilitation has begun,” the hospital said, adding that plans to send the children home were being made.
The March 13 crash near the Alpine town of Sierre was one of the worst road disasters in Swiss history.
Funerals for those killed in the crash will take place Wednesday and Thursday in the Belgian towns of Lommel and Heverlee.
