Ex-Honduran leader’s party officially registered

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) – Former Honduran President Manuel Zelaya has registered a political party that will be able to compete in the country’s next elections in 2013.

Honduras’ Electoral Tribunal says Zelaya’s party is called the Liberty and Re-Foundation Party, known as Libre.

The tribunal said Tuesday that Zelaya turned in 62,000 signatures supporting his party, well above the 42,290 signatures required.

Zelaya said the party’s presidential candidate in 2013 elections will be his wife, Xiomara Castro.

Zelaya was deposed at gunpoint and taken out of the country in a 2009 coup, an act that isolated Honduras internationally.

He returned to Honduras after Colombia and Venezuela brokered a deal with Honduran authorities.
