PHOENIX — Scottsdale-based Taser maker Axon said it planned to build larger headquarters several miles from its current site, signing a $10.3 million lease on tribal land.

A representative from the company said in an email Friday construction was scheduled to start in July 2019. The Phoenix Business Journal reported Thursday that the 69-year lease was signed last week with Apex Park at Pima, east of Loop 101 on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian reservation.

Axon said the building, about 10 miles from its main office near Loop 101 and Princess Drive, would be finished in 2021 and would consolidate two offices and two warehouse spaces.

The site will include a 325,000-square foot space for manufacturing and production.

Axon equips police departments all over the country with body cameras. This week, Boston became the 46th big city to sign on for the equipment, software, training and data storage, among some of the pieces of the package.

In 2017, the company changed its name from Taser International, as it moved to focus on body cameras for law enforcement.

Axon offered policing agencies free use of the body cameras on a one-year trial basis.

After a year, departments could opt to but the cameras and docking stations for a total of $600 (cameras were to cost about $400 apiece) and then also pay $80 a month per camera to store its data.
